For over 25 years, One Piece has been one of the biggest forces in anime and manga, building a global fanbase that continues to grow with every new adventure from Monkey D. Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates. The franchise has expanded far beyond its original source material, inspiring blockbuster films, video games, tons of popular merch, and even Netflix’s new live-action adaptation.
As hype for the series shows no signs of slowing down, fans are already looking ahead to what could be next for the beloved world created by Eiichiro Oda. A big discussion point within the community over the years has been the possibility of a fully realized One Piece RPG, and while One Piece Odyssey was a valiant attempt at giving fans what they wanted, it really only scratched the surface of what’s possible in the universe.
And while it may not be the adaptation that all fans are hoping for, One Piece: Dawn of Liberation is a massive new role-playing game that fans of the franchise can officially check out this year, expected to arrive this October (via Kickstarter).
One Piece: Dawn of Liberation is a tabletop role-playing game (or TTRPG) that officially launched via a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, blowing through its original goal in a matter of minutes to get a fully funded release this October for backers. It’s a 1–4 player cooperative game that takes players through the Wano arc, saving citizens from the Shogun Orochi and defeating the Emperor of the Sea, Kaido.
Players will gradually build a crew of adventurers from One Piece, recruiting Samurai and collecting resources as they defend Wano’s “Joy,” a core feature of the game that will slowly be reduced by Kaido’s Animal Kingdom pirates and bosses if left unchecked. The game operates on a three-act structure and can take up to 140+ minutes to complete, though it allows for “saving” during and between each act.
If your friends aren’t available to play, Dawn of Liberation actually has a solo mode that can be completed alone as well. The game comes with a ton of content, with a game board, dice tower, 17 character shogis, tons of different dice types, character sheets, various types of tokens, resource cards, and more, as well as the requisite rulebook, quickstart guide, and blister.
Dawn of Liberation is an absolutely massive board game that fans of the One Piece franchise cannot pass up, and will officially be entering retail locations this fall. Backers will be getting their shipments as soon as September this year, and if you’re interested in checking this huge One Piece TTRPG out, you can review the rulebook and various components/rules on Kickstarter now.
