Pacific Rim Is Finally Getting Sequel, But Nobody Is Talking About It

It was back in 2013 that director Guillermo del Toro released Pacific Rim, a “military science fiction mecha monster film”, and the first entry in the Pacific Rim franchise. Starring Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Charlie Day and many more, the story follows a future where inhabiants of Earth are at war with the Kaiju, collosal sea monsters who have emerged from a portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. In order to put a stop to their invasion, humans must pilot giant humanoid mechas known as Jaegers, but this is only possible after the two pilots link together telepathically via a mental link known as the Drift.

Swiftly becoming Del Toro’s most commercially successful film, Pacific Rim was soon followed by a sequel in 2018, titled Pacific Rim Uprising, but if you are anything like me, you like to pretend that this sequel never existed. The first (and only) movie, however, remains one of my favorites.

Since Pacific Rim Uprising was released, it seems as though the movie franchise is not set to welcome any further sequels. Whilst there may be plans for a live-action prequel series at Prime Video, it seems as though there is another exciting release to look forward to in the meantime. Or is it?

Pacific Rim: Breachfall Is Seriously Elusive

Created by Zatu Games, Pacific Rim: Breachfall is a board game inspired by the movie series of the same name. Coming in at £43.65, it is quite the investment, but no less admirable for fans of the mecha movie franchise. Available to pre-order now, this is what the official item description reads:

PACIFIC RIM: BREACHFALL can be played by two to four players. One team is on the side of the PAN PACIFIC DEFENSE CORPS (PPDC) and can build powerful JAEGERS. The other team plays as the alien PRECURSORS, who create the dangerous KAIJU, whose only goal is to destroy humanity.

During the game, the two opposing groups have different goals to achieve victory. The PRECURSORS must destroy all the cities around the Pacific Ocean. The PPDC, with their Jaegers, must find a way to close ‘THE BREACH’ so that no more KAIJU can reach Earth.

The game ends when one of these goals is achieved. The first team to reach its goal is the winner!

While playing, you can always discuss your tactics with your teammate. You can also show each other your cards. But be careful, your opponents can hear you.

Whilst this all sounds well and good, it was back in 2023 that Pacific Rim: Breachfall was first announced and made available to pre-order. However, with no official release date to this day, it remains a mystery as to when we can expect the highly anticipated board game.

Pacific Rim Fans Might Be In For A Wait

As such, over on r/PacificRim, a thread from 2023 already asked an important question: “Why isn’t anyone talking about Pacific Rim Breachfall?” Not only that, but as one comment read, “Is it still happening?”

Put simply, we do not know. There has been no official update for the release of Pacific Rim: Breachfall, and despite pre-orders still being accepted, there is no news of anybody receiving the product. As such, all we can do is wait and see if this board game will ever come to fruition as, despit the long delay, it is no denying that it sounds like a must-buy for Pacific Rim fans.
