Releasing back in 2000 for the Game Boy Color, Pokémon Crystal was released to serve as an enhanced version of Pokémon Gold and Silver. Despite being the final instalments in Pokémon’s second generation, Pokémon Crystal introduced a variety of brand-new features which received praise from fans, including a playable female protagonist, a Battle Tower area, and general quality-of-life improvements that the franchise had been dying out for.
Despite praise for its story and gameplay, Pokémon Crystal became the lowest-selling Pokémon title at the time. However, as is usually the case with entries in the Nintendo franchise, opinions have since turned around, and many remember Pokémon Crystal fondly over two decades on from its initial launch.
As such, countless fans have been inspired by it, leading to the launch of many ROM hacks. This includes Pokémon Crystal Reflection, a ROM hack that went live back in April and has captured the hearts of fans ever since. Created by JK41, Pokémon Crystal Reflection features custom, handcrafted battles for every Trainer in the game, new story beats and battles, reworked movepools, rebalancing of the moves themselves, reimagined wild encounters, revamped Trainer AI, complete text overhaul, and the addressing of the “infamous level curve”.
Set in the Johto region, Pokémon Crystal Reflection was created to rebalance the difficulty of the original Nintendo title, as well as enhance the narrative. As to why JK41 chose Pokémon Crystal to work on, this is what they said:
“I believe the pair of key design goals paint a rather pristine picture of the type of hack this is. Choosing the word “rebalancing” in relation to the game’s difficulty is intentional. What this hack is not and will never be is a nuzlocke- or kaizo-centric experience. Simply put, if I added features or designed around those kinds of hardcore experiences, it would clash with the design already in place and make the overall experience less cohesive. That being said, the game does feature more challenging battles across the board, and nuzlocking Crystal Reflection is 100% doable. Players are free to play the game however they want—that’s part of the beauty of Pokémon!”
Available to play for free, Pokémon Crystal Reflection also aims to make players feel even more connected to the Johto region. With its creator wanting Johto to “stand on its own two feet” even more, this ROM hack has included narrative-focused changes and additions that aim to give the region its time to shine. As such, previous Gym Leaders that did not have any story relevance in Pokémon Crystal now have a voice.
Overall, Pokémon Crystal Reflection aims to breathe new life into the Nintendo classic whilst keeping the main reasons why many of us loved it in the first place.
