The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3’s time jump is set to shake things up in a big way.
Created by Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, the hit Prime Video fantasy series chronicles Sauron’s (Charlie Vickers) rise to power during the Second Age of Middle-earth. After returning for season 2 in 2024, The Rings of Power season 3 is now only months away, and it’s set to leap forward in time by five years.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Joe Deckelmeier, Payne dives into what this time jump means for The Rings of Power season 3, revealing that some characters will be in very different places from where they were last seen in season 2. Jumping forward by five years, the showrunner explains, means season 3 picks up in the middle of the war between Sauron and the Elves, and it gives the story a “shot of adrenaline.” Check out Payne’s full comment below:
Whenever you’re going to tell a story, you always want to get in as late as you can. Every scene, every sequence, every episode, every season. So we said, “When is the perfect time to come into this story?” And we wanted to be a time in which the Elves and Sauron are at the peak of their war.
What it does is it lets you reset the table in a way that’s really satisfying for audience members. It gives you shot of adrenaline in your story, where they say, “Oh, now this character was over here, is over there, and actually these people are paired up. And oh, wow, these people are fighting this battle over here. Queen Míriel, who we saw in last time in chains and now she’s leading a secret resistance over here.”
It forces your audience to have to catch up with it, for the fans, and for people who are coming to the show anew it gives them the perfect opportunity to jump in.
The Rings of Power season 2’s ending sees Sauron kill Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards) and obtain the Nine Rings of Men. His power has been on an upward trajectory since the show began, and season 3 is about to kick that into high gear.
As the Rings of Power season 3 trailer reveals, Sauron will finally forge the One Ring in the upcoming episodes. His armies continue to grow and continue to take hold of Middle-earth, meaning the forces of evil will seemingly be at their highest point yet when the show returns.
Sauron’s rise isn’t going unchecked, however. Following this five-year time jump, Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova) will spend at least some of the upcoming season teamed up, and Gandalf (Daniel Weyman) has also become a more wise and powerful wizard. Elrond (Robert Aramayo), too, hasn’t yet given up hope.
What remains to be seen is whether this time jump will be the show’s last. Payne and McKay have long held that their vision for The Rings of Power‘s story includes five seasons, presumably ending with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men and Sauron’s defeat. Season 3 could lay further groundwork for this endgame, potentially setting up an additional time jump for season 4, which hasn’t yet been given the green light.
Many questions remain about season 3, but reviews for The Rings of Power season 2 were generally positive from critics, suggesting it has an opportunity to continue this positive momentum. If Payne’s latest comment is anything to go by, viewers can expect a story with even more energy and higher stakes.
