Stephen King‘s dystopian thriller crosses the finish line, topping HBO Max’s streaming charts.
The iconic author is regarded as one of the greatest in horror and thriller stories, inspiring many adaptations over the last few decades. In fact, many have become classics, such as The Shawshank Redemption and Carrie. In just the last few years, King movies and series have become a hot trend, including The Life of Chuck, Salem’s Lot, and The Boogeyman. While some of his stories were adapted many times, one of his oldest novels received its cinematic version nearly five decades later.
King first wrote The Long Walk in 1966, but the novel wasn’t published until 1977 under the pseudonym Richard Bachman. Following decades-long challenges to the movie’s development, the cinematic iteration, directed by Hunger Games filmmaker Francis Lawrence, finally arrived in theaters in September 2025. Now, months after its release, The Long Walk landed on HBO Max and debuted at #1 on the movie streaming charts.
The King movie overtook Lee Cronin’s The Mummy from the top spot, while the top 10 charts consist of Undertone (#3), How to Make a Killing (#4), Deadpool: The Supercut (#5), The Equalizer (#6), and Legally Blonde (#7). The Long Walk previously streamed on Starz earlier in the year before releasing on HBO Max on July 10.
The story follows a group of young boys who compete in a deadly walking competition until one remains standing. Despite being one of King’s most popular stories, a materialized adaptation took nearly five decades to step foot in theaters. Iconic horror director George A. Romero first attempted to develop the movie in 1988, but it was stalled. Then, nearly two decades later, Frank Darabont, who also adapted The Mist and The Green Mile, tested his luck to make The Long Walk to no avail.
The key challenge was trying to find the right balance between the story’s slow pacing and monotone. Finally, Lawrence helmed the project after directing several Hunger Games movies, which also followed a similar dystopian story of a deadly game. The Long Walk cast featured rising stars, such as Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Garrett Wareing, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, and Ben Wang.
The long wait to adapt the dystopian thriller was worthwhile, becoming a box-office and critical success for Lionsgate. Reviews of The Long Walk were very positive, with critics praising the emotional weight of the brotherhood, the cast performances, and faithfulness to King’s original story. It ultimately earned an 88% critics’ score and an 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In addition, The Long Walk performed well in theaters, earning $63 million globally against a $20 million budget.
While the dystopian thriller jumps onto HBO Max’s charts, more King adaptations are on the way. Mike Flanagan’s Carrie series is expected to be released in October 2026, while The Institute season 2 just wrapped filming. Meanwhile, projects like The Mist and The Dark Tower are still in development.
The Long Walk is now streaming on HBO Max.
