Warning: This article contains spoilers for Supergirl.Supergirl is now in theaters, and after the DC movie ends, Milly Alcock’s DC hero is set up to make another appearance, and that movie has already been confirmed. The new DC Universe is a very interconnected franchise. Multiple characters, like Lex Luthor, Superman, Rick Flag Sr., Peacemaker, Green Lantern, and many more, have already shown up in more than one release.
Among those characters is Alcock’s Supergirl. After all, the actress debuted as Kara Zor-El at the end of David Corenswet’s Superman movie. Now, the DCU Chapter One changed things around, with Alcock leading Supergirl and Corenswet appearing as Superman in a supporting role, with multiple scenes sprinkled throughout the film. Supergirl’s new DC adventure sees her go on a cosmic journey.
The film, which was directed by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya), not James Gunn, adapts the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics. Those were written by Tom King, who is one of the architects of the DCU — he is a co-creator of HBO’s Lanterns series and the showrunner of the animated Mister Miracle —with art by Bilquis Evely. Ana Nogueira was in charge of writing Supergirl‘s screenplay.
The result is a DC movie that features a complex version of Supergirl, one who spent years on a piece of Krypton and had a much darker backstory than Clark Kent’s. By the end of DC’s Supergirl movie, Kara has gone through a transformative ride, choosing to make a key change. This decision sets up her confirmed DCU return.
When Supergirl Will Next Appear In The DC Universe
Before Supergirl had even arrived in theaters, it was already revealed that Alcock would return as Supergirl in the DCU Superman movie sequel, Man of Tomorrow. That film will be released on July 9, 2027. Man of Tomorrow is a two-hander, with Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, who are bitter rivals, having to team up against their will to stop a bigger threat, Lars Eidinger’s Brainiac. Supergirl‘s ending sees Kara decide to stay on Earth and finally try to make the planet her home, spending time with Clark. This positions her to team up with Superman in Man of Tomorrow.
At the Supergirl premiere, James Gunn talked about what to expect from Alcock’s DCU return in Man of Tomorrow. Speaking to ExtraTV, the DC Studios co-CEO and Man of Tomorrow‘s writer/director revealed that Supergirl will have a big role to play in the Superman sequel. Gunn also confirmed that her major differences from Superman, which can be felt throughout Supergirl, will play an even bigger role in the 2027 movie. Based on that, Alcock will return in a major DCU role in the franchise’s Superman sequel, only a year after her solo movie, which is perfect for Supergirl fans.
Will Supergirl 2 Happen?
Now, while Alcock’s DCU future is set in stone with Supergirl being important to Man of Tomorrow, the same can’t be said about a Supergirl movie sequel. At the time of writing, DC has not announced any plans to bring Kara back for another solo adventure, with the studio waiting to see how Supergirl plays out in theaters first before making a decision. However, based on how it is looking so far, a Supergirl sequel seems like wishful thinking. On Rotten Tomatoes, Supergirl stands at a negative 57% critics’ score, though it has a better 76% audience score.
Supergirl‘s bad reviews are just the tip of the iceberg as to why Supergirl 2 is unlikely to happen. The DC movie has a reported budget of $170 million. That means it needs to finish between $340 million and $425 million to break even. However, according to Global Box Office on X, Supergirl is projected to have a domestic opening weekend in the $40M range, similar to The Marvels, which is the lowest-grossing movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date. Supergirl is bracing for box office bomb territory, which makes a sequel unlikely.
