Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time has seen an undeniable resurgence in popularity since the Amazon series was announced a few years back. Despite the show’s abrupt cancellation, fans of the IP are still optimistic that a live-action adaptation of the sprawling fantasy saga is possible, even if unlikely to happen anytime soon. Further, with the War of the Dragon RPG gaining traction recently, it’s clear that there’s massive interest in further adaptations of Jordan’s work, regardless of the medium.
Further, the announcement of a brand-new Wheel of Time RPG from iwot Studios successfully reignited hope among fans that we may finally get a legitimate open-world adventure in The Third Age. Unfortunately, gamers are quite skeptical about the future of this project given the studio’s troubled history (via Reddit), and it could result in yet another major blow for this new era of The Wheel of Time.
The Wheel Of Time Will Be Back… Hopefully?
Given the popularity of Robert Jordan’s original fantasy novels and Brandon Sanderson’s continued line of stories that followed, it’s clear that The Wheel of Time has serious staying power. The cancellation of the Amazon show was largely a result of Jordan’s world being far to elaborate and the story’s depth being a challenge to adapt to screen. The same could be said about a potential open-world RPG for that matter, and the studio in charge of the project will certainly have their work cut out.
Sadly, many fans remain skeptical about The Wheel of Time RPG’s future due to iwot Studios’ long history of announcing ambitious Wheel of Time projects that either failed to materialize or were quietly abandoned. That track record has led to persistent accusations of “IP camping,” with critics arguing the company has historically been more successful at retaining adaptation rights than delivering finished games.
The Wheel Of Time Deserves Better
To add to the skepticism, recent reports suggest iwot Studios is facing significant financial trouble. According to LinkedIn posts from former employees cited by French outlet ActuGaming, the Montréal studio has laid off most of its staff after running short on funding, leaving only a small core team to seek new investment and publishing partners, and these reported layoffs and lack of official updates paint a concerning picture for the project’s future.
That said, as of July 2026, iwot Studios still maintains that its AAA open-world Wheel of Time RPG is in development, and there has been no announcement that it has been canceled or put on hold. It’s unfortunate, because there’s arguably no other fantasy IP out there as ripe for a Witcher 3-style open-world RPG adaptation than The Wheel of Time.
Ultimately, gamers are left imagining what would be possible if the project were in the hands of a studio like CD Projekt Red or Warhorse Games, who are now working on a Lord of the Rings Middle-Earth-based RPG. While iwot Studios has a massive opportunity to deliver something great, until they provide a significant proof of life for the project, we can only keep our fingers crossed that The Wheel of Time gets the love it truly deserves.
