The Last of Us and Valheim don’t really seem like two games that would mesh well together. Sure, they’ve both got somewhat moody atmospheres and a penchant for the natural world, but one is a zombie-infested nightmare and the other is the mostly peaceful yet occasionally unbelievably stressful Viking simulator. The two couldn’t be further apart in terms of goals, ambitions, and even tone. Yet, somehow, one developer saw fit to try and blend the two, and the results are surprisingly positive.
What is perhaps even more positive is that this merging of two distinct and very different worlds is yet another free game players can claim and keep forever, no strings attached. While there are a lot of games like Valheim, and even a few that manage to distill TLOU’s best qualities into a unique experience, this completely free game is still worth claiming, especially for those looking to expand their libraries without breaking the bank. The only catch is that the time to claim it is running out, as this is a limited-time offer.
There are so many amazing survival games available now, that even fans of the genre may have little time for a new one. However, for those who enjoy both the base building and player-led exploration of games like Valheim and the pandemic-induced world-ending events of games like The Last of Us, KeepUp Survival may just be worth paying attention to. Its eerie island filled with natural, untamed beauty and mysterious hidden labs to explore, tries to replicate the same dark yet occasionally peaceful tone of The Last of Us.
There’s a story to progress through as the player attempts to follow in the footsteps of the island’s previous inhabitant and attempts to discern just what happened, as well as plenty of base building, animal hunting, crafting, dog taming, exploring, and so much more to get stuck into. All of this is completely playable in multiplayer too, although it can be enjoyed as a solo experience, much like Valheim and another of its clear inspirations, The Forest.
For those who don’t want to get KeepUp Survival for free on the Epic Games Store, it is also available for 40% off on Steam for $8.99.
There aren’t any zombies or monsters to contend with in the main game, so those who found that to be the most stress-inducing aspect of The Last of Us can rest easy. However, for those who enjoy a little combat in their survival crafting games, you’ll still need to defend yourself, as well as deal with a number of survival mechanics. KeepUp Survival is completely free to keep on Epic Games Store, with its original price of $14.99 being slashed by 100%. However, you’ll need to grab it before July 19 in order to get it for free.
KeepUp Survival has fairly mixed reviews over on Steam, with some praising its unique atmosphere and base building mechanics, while others criticize the lack of enemies to fight and general jankiness of the gameplay. Still, it could serve as a fun game to tide fans over until the release of The Last of Us Part 3. At the very least, it is another free game to add to people’s libraries and keep them entertained, if only for a few hours and remind them of why Valheim and The Last of Us are so excellent.
