Warning! Spoilers ahead for Reacher season 4, episode 1, “City of Brotherly Love.”Jack Reacher is back, and he opens Reacher season 4 with an interesting word: “Whizwit.” Based on Lee Child’s books, the Alan Ritchson-led show has been on a great run, delivering great storytelling since 2022. During the first couple of seasons, Reacher effectively laid out Jack’s backstory. Season 3 kept things tied to his history, but that changes in season 4, as Jack’s connection to the case is rooted in pure coincidence.
After Killing Floor, Bad Luck and Trouble, and Persuader, Reacher season 4 is tackling g 14th installment in Child’s series, Gone Tomorrow. Based on the source material, Jack gets to the bottom of a woman who committed suicide on the train that he was riding on. Despite not having any personal connection to the victim, his guilt over being unable to stop the tragedy fuels him to dig deeper into what eventually becomes a massive conspiracy cover-up. For a story that is dark, Jack’s first words in Tracker season 4 sound odd.
“Whizwit” Is Philly Slang
Unlike previous seasons where Jack found himself in more rural settings, Reacher season 4 opens with him in Philadelphia. It’s actually one of the changes that Prime Video made from Gone Tomorrow, whose story is set in New York City. Granted that the landscapes are vastly different, the new metro does its job well, at least from what’s seen in Reacher season 4 thus far. This doesn’t answer the question, however, about what “Whizwhit” means.
After coming out of an establishment and before he heads down to the SEPTA, Jack approaches a food truck and says the word. The scene is cut before the person talks to can reply and give additional context about the situation. That being said, for people in Philadelphia, “Whizwhit” is known, but to those uninitiated, it is a local slang that refers to a kind of Philly cheesesteak. “Whizwhit” means with cheez WHIZ and WIT onions. That’s the basics, but look into this a little more.
Admittedly, the slang may not be widely used anymore, as some locals claim that only tourists and people from the suburbs say it. Jack is technically a tourist, however, before he gets roped into the new case in Reacher season 4, so him saying it still makes sense.
Reacher Season 4’s Opening Line Says A Lot About His Character
The changes in Reacher’s settings are vital for a couple of reasons. For starters, it helps in terms of establishing the look and feel of one season with another; Margrave looks very different to Maine. Secondly, it emphasizes Jack’s dirfter lifestyle. He wanders around and never staying in one place. When he’s arrested by the Philadelphia PD, he makes it clear that he is interested in immersing himself in their culture, thus his use of “whiznit” when ordering his cheesesteak.
Beyond Jack himself, opening Reacher season 4 with local slang suggests that the city will play a big part in the show’s storytelling moving forward. In fact, Jack orders Philly cheesesteak later on, while he’s being held at the precinct. In the same sequence, Gritty — the Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot, makes an appearance. Jack may not be a hockey fan, but Tamara Green clearly is.
