Captain James T. Kirk canonically died in Star Trek Generations, but Star Trek fans may not know that William Shatner donned his Starfleet uniform to play Kirk again just 3 years later.
Star Trek Generations hinged on the historic meeting between Captain Kirk and Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), which culminated in Kirk’s historic death. This was a symbolic passing of the torch from Star Trek: The Original Series to Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was taking over the Star Trek movie franchise.
On Instagram, @star_trek_shots shared clips from 1997’s “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” where William Shatner played Captain Kirk once again. Unrelated to Paramount+’s TV series starring Holly Hunter, Interplay’s “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” was a PC video game that featured Mr. Shatner’s first on-screen appearance as Captain Kirk after Star Trek Generations. See the videos below:
“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” is set in the interim between Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in 2287 and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 2293. During those six years, Captain Kirk was in command of the USS Enterprise-A, which would be the culmination of his legendary career as Captain of the Enterprise.
Suitably, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” showcases Captain Kirk giving motivational speeches to Starfleet cadets in the video game’s cinematic cut scenes, where Kirk shares his incomparable experience and wisdom, like, “Risk is our business.”
“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” also features George Takei and Walter Koenig reprising their roles as Captain Hikaru Sulu and Commander Pavel Chekov, respectively. Koenig’s Chekov also appeared in Star Trek Generations alongside William Shatner’s Kirk in the film’s prologue set after Star Trek VI.
William Shatner was courted to return as different versions of Captain Kirk in the 32 years since Star Trek Generations hit movie theaters. Star Trek: Enterprise season 4’s plan for Mr. Shatner to play the Mirror Universe’s evil Tiberius Kirk, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds‘ hopes for Bill to reprise an alternate timeline Kirk from “The City on the Edge of Forever,” never happened.
Shatner has not played Kirk since the Captain’s death in Star Trek Generations, which was filmed in 1994. However, William Shatner was an executive producer and helped guide Sam Witwer’s physical performance as Kirk in 765874 – Unification, a 2024 short film by OTOY and Roddenberry Entertainment.
Instead of William Shatner making an official Captain Kirk comeback, Star Trek recast Jim Kirk, first with Chris Pine in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies starting in 2009, and, most recently, Paul Wesley in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, beginning in 2022.
As a 29-year-old PC game, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” isn’t considered official canon, and William Shatner has not returned as Captain Kirk in a Star Trek TV show or movie. However, seeing Mr. Shatner back in uniform playing Captain Kirk again in the video games’ cut-scenes is a delight, especially since only 3 years had passed since Star Trek Generations.
