Hard Candy goes places most thrillers won’t, and the disturbing content is presented with an unflinching approach.
Unlike most revenge stories, which show the protagonist suffering, Hard Candy leaves things up to the imagination. The fact that the main character is so young makes the plot all the more disturbing, and Page’s performance is nearly perfect. The small scale keeps things grounded, and it’s easy to believe something like Hard Candy could happen in real life.

Audition (1999)
Though it’s usually considered a horror film, Audition has all the hallmarks of a disturbing thriller as well. A widower uses a fake casting call to get dates, but his new girlfriend turns out to be strange in ways he could never have imagined. Audition is the type of film that builds slowly, but the climax is one of the most shocking moments in cinema history.
There is a pensive and almost dreamy tone to the first half of the film, which makes it all the more disturbing when the main character crashes back down to reality in the second half. It’s frightening both by implication and through its selective use of disgusting imagery and sudden scares. Takashi Miike’s vision ranks highly among the scariest Japanese films of all time.

That is a description of what happens in the film, but it doesn’t do the surrealist gem justice.

Movies try to make the harsh realities of life logical, but Funny Games specifically reminds us that true evil exists without clear motivation. A family staying at a lakeside vacation home is suddenly attacked by two young men who force them to participate in a series of indignities. The movie’s deadpan delivery is exceptionally disturbing, and it goes above and beyond the classic “it could happen to you” framework.
One of the movie’s villains breaks the fourth wall on several occasions and talks directly to the viewer. The Oscar-nominated blockbuster checks several classic disturbing thriller boxes.
The violence is gruesome, and the film’s cynicism creates a dark stage for the story to play out. Stellar performances from Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Paul Dano lend the film some serious dramatic impact, but it never gets lost in its own glossy Hollywood production. Memories of Murder is not your usual serial killer thriller, and Bong Joon Ho’s Aughts masterpiece digs much deeper. The movie works as an engaging character drama, but it is also a creepy thriller that grows on the viewer over time.
There’s an inescapable sense of dread that only gets more powerful as the story progresses. The ineptitude of the investigation, and their own failings as people mirror the dark realities of actual slayings. The film offers no satisfactory answers, and that makes it more frightening than most horror movies. Memories of Murder is so disturbing because it reflects the mundane evil of the real world.

Not all thrillers follow the same formula, and Black Swan breaks the mold while delivering some truly terrifying moments. A ballerina is obsessed with her craft, but the arrival of a new dancer threatens her leading role. Self-destruction is a pretty disturbing concept when depicted graphically, and that’s where Black Swan shines brightest as a thriller. Seven is a well-crafted piece of Hollywood fare, but it has plenty of cynical themes to give its story some depth. Most thrillers made in the decades since owe a debt of gratitude to Fincher’s unforgettable masterwork.
