The Defenders are going to be missing a familiar face in Daredevil: Born Again season 3.
Ever since Charlie Cox’s iconic hero made his Marvel Cinematic Universe return with Spider-Man: No Way Home, his fellow Netflix stars have been steadily making their way back into the fold. From Jon Bernthal’s Punisher in Born Again season 1 spawning both a Disney+ special and supporting turn in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, to Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Mike Colter’s Luke Cage in season 2 of Cox’s show, the street-level Defenders are back in action after Netflix’s Marvel deal ended.
Now, in an interview with Inverse about her role in Silo season 3, Jessica Henwick has offered an update on her potential MCU return in Daredevil: Born Again season 3. The star began by acknowledging that she’s “said multiple times over the years [that] I would love to come back” to play Colleen Wing at some point, and that she knows “everyone is back this season.”
However, the star further offered a definitive stance on her potential Daredevil: Born Again season 3 appearance, confirming that she’s “not in this season,” even though she and creative team Dario Scardapane, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead “did have discussions” about her returning. Ultimately, one of the things that kept her from coming back was wanting it to be “the right story,” particularly after “her story ended with her going off into the sunset” in Iron Fist season 2:
Jessica Henwick: She has the Iron Fist. She’s got Misty by her side. Daughters of the Dragon is happening. She ended on a really great note. I’m just not interested in bringing her back unless it’s worth sort of unpicking that happiness, because obviously she can’t be happy on a TV series. If she’s back, something’s gone wrong. [The Daredevil team] were like, “Yeah, we don’t want to bring you back, and then you just stood in the back of the shot.” So, hopefully soon, but I don’t really know.
Henwick’s Colleen was first introduced in the MCU in Iron Fist season 1, running the Chikara Dojo in Chinatown and primarily teaching self-defense to troubled kids, only to be inadvertently pulled into the titular character’s fight against the Hand. She went on to reprise the role in the crossover miniseries event The Defenders, as well as a guest spot on Luke Cage season 2, laying the groundwork for her and Misty Knight’s later forming of the Daughters of the Dragon, and season 2 of the aforementioned Finn Jones-led series.
Much to Henwick’s point above, Iron Fist season 2 ended on a largely favorable note for Colleen, but also one with a lot of room to expand in the future. After narrowly defeating Sacha Dhawan’s Davos, Wing officially became the new Iron Fist, using her abilities to defend Chinatown, while also continuing her work with Misty, all while Jones’ Danny Rand went in search of the mysterious Orson Randall.
Given Daredevil: Born Again as a whole has been a relaunch point for many of Netflix’s MCU characters, thanks in large part to its street-level New York setting, it certainly stands to be the show with the best path to bring Henwick back as Colleen. Season 3, in particular, seemed like prime territory as set photos confirmed Jones would also make his first MCU appearance in the eight years since Iron Fist ended, with his solo show featuring the pair in a committed relationship.
Despite some frustrations sure to arise from fans about her lack of a return, Colleen’s absence from Daredevil: Born Again season 3 may ultimately be for the better for both Henwick’s character and the series. Season 2 does seem to have a fairly stacked roster in its cast, and with the discussions having pointed to a very minimal role for Colleen, the original story plans may have proved more underwhelming than exciting.
