DC officially has a franchise first on the way thanks to one upcoming DC Universe show that’s on the horizon. While DC Comics is getting ever closer to its 100 year anniversary – having relased its first issue all the way back in 1937 – there are still plenty of firsts for the wider franchise to reach that are being achieved to this day, showing there’s plenty of room for the franchise to continue on for decades to come.
Indeed, given the expansive character roster DC has today, it’s in some ways easier than ever to pull off franchise firsts using either some of DC’s more underappreciated figures, or by featuring some heroes and villains who are newer to the comic world. Of course, this is even more true now thanks to the DC Universe, which seems to be tasked with finding novel ways to approach the franchise’s lore.
With this including putting a range of characters who have seldom gotten the on-screen spotlight center stage, it’s in some ways no surprise that one of the DC Universe’s upcoming shows is teed up to be a key franchise first in a major way despite DC’s now 89-year-long run – though it is exciting to note the series will effectively make up for some of DC’s prior missed opportunities with one character.
Booster Gold’s DC Universe Show Will Be A Franchise First For DC Altogether
One of the latest updates about the DC Universe came in the form of writer David Jenkins taking to Bluesky to reveal what stage of production the DCU show centered around Booster Gold is at, stating: “Just handed the Booster Gold pilot in. I love it. One of my favorite pilot scripts.“
News that the upcoming Booster Gold show now has a pilot script is crucial information, since DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has been upfront previously about projects being greenlight or left out to pasture based on whether their scripts are strong enough, meaning this milestone is a decidedly major one for the project, even if there is still the chance this pilot script may end up not being the final form the show takes.
It’s also a milestone that marks a franchise first for DC now properly begin to start coming to fruition, as the DCU Booster Gold show would be the hero’s first solo DC series, though he has made appearances in a range of animated and live-action shows over the years.
Given DCU shows are officially part of the franchise’s intertwined cinematic universe, this show is all the more exciting given it suggests Booster Gold will also be able to appear in DCU movies and crossover with the rest of the franchise’s heroes and villains very soon, allowing the DC Universe to once more shed light on a comic character who broader audiences will have little to no idea about.
Why There Hasn’t Been A Booster Gold Show Until Now
Unfortunately, Booster Gold has long been one of the most obscure DC heroes in the franchise’s roster, despite having some solid comic stories, and despite the concept of a time-travelling superhero being one of the more immediately engaging hero premises in the franchise’s extensive roster.
As it stands, Booster Gold’s lack of mainstream adaptations is sure to have developed a self-fulfilling prophecy about how well the character has been known by the general public. Outside of animated shows, Gold’s time on-screen has been limited to say the least, as the hero has only really appeared in an episode of Smallville in the live-action sphere, with reported plans for an appearance in Legends of Tomorrow and for Booster Gold to have his own show in the 2010s both falling through.
With all this in mind, it makes all the more sense for a Booster Gold show to come through now, both because of the missed attempts and opportunities DC has had before, and because the DC Universe is uniquely positioned to be the best place for the hero to get his own show and play a bigger role in an interconnected universe.
