A Salem’s Lot series is finally sinking its teeth into audiences on streaming.
Stephen King’s 1975 horror novel follows author Ben Mears, who returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot, or ‘Salem’s Lot for short, in Maine, and discovers that the town’s residents are turning into vampires. Salem’s Lot has inspired several movies and miniseries, including a 1979 two-part miniseries, another 2004 miniseries, and a 2024 feature film released on Max. King later revisited the setting in his 1978 short story “Jerusalem’s Lot,” which inspired another series that has recently resurfaced on streaming.
Five years after its conclusion, Chapelwaite has finally returned as an American streaming hit. Written by Peter and Jason Filardi, loosely based on the short story “Jerusalem’s Lot” by Stephen King, the horror series is set in 1850 and follows the captain of a whaler ship who relocates his family of three children to his ancestral home in Maine after his wife dies at sea.
Now, following its conclusion in 2021, Chapelwaite is No. 2 on the Top 10 TV overall most popular movies and TV shows on MGM+ in the United States for today, June 15. It ranks below From in first and below Earth Abides, Reign of Fire, A Working Man, Robin Hood, The Institute, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, Condor, and Transformers: The Last Knight at No. 10.
Chapelwaite‘s cast includes two-time Oscar winner Adrien Brody (The Pianist, The Brutalist) in the lead role alongside Emily Hampshire, Jennifer Ens, Sirena Gulamgaus, Ian Ho, Eric Peterson, Christopher Heyerdahl, Julian Richings, Steven McCarthy, Gord Rand, and Trina Corkum.
The series first aired on Epix on August 22, 2021, and wrapped up on October 31, 2021. The series was initially renewed for a second season in February 2022, but in November 2023, it was confirmed that MGM+ would no longer proceed with it.
Chapelwaite received mixed reviews, resulting in a 56% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that it can feel somewhat drawn out across its ten episodes, but viewers who enjoy a moody mystery with occasional real scares may still find it worthwhile. It was received better by audiences, resulting in a 79% score from that group.
Even now, Chapelwaite keeps finding new viewers on streaming, quietly riding the wave of renewed interest in Stephen King adaptations. It may not be perfect, but its eerie atmosphere and strong performances still give it a lingering and watchable pull. Overall, Chapelwaite remains an easy recommendation for fans of slow-burn horror.
