When FromSoftware dropped the original Dark Souls all the way back in 2011, they probably knew they’d made something genuinely brilliant. What they probably didn’t anticipate was just how much of a cultural impact the future trilogy was going to have on video games as a whole, even spawning a sub-genre all of its own.
It returned in 2018 via Dark Souls: Remastered, which updated the game for a more modern audience, and which now serves as the standard way to play the game in 2026. Happily, there are also a bunch of mods out there for that version of the game to extend the experience further, and one in particular is very much worthy of your attention.
Dark Souls: The Fading Flame Is Brutal
Over on Nexus Mods, you should be able to find the download page for The Fading Flame 2.0, a gameplay overhaul mod that restores a bunch of the game’s cut content, as well as adding quality-of-life changes and visual improvements.
The list of actual, tangible gameplay additions is vast, with just some of the specific inclusions as follows:
- 7 entirely new bosses with new models and animations
- 2 bosses remade from scratch with new models and animations
- 1 boss reworked with new attacks
- Restored content in 2 bosses
- 9 new enemies with new models and animations
- 2 new invaders
- 2 cut questlines restored
- 23 new weapons (19 of them with new animations)
- 9 new armor sets and 4 new helmets
- 4 new spells
- 5 new miracles
- 4 new pyromancies + improved undead rapport
- 1 new ring
There are also plenty of reworks implemented across a bunch of different approaches to combat, and really useful changes like improved hitboxes on bosses and the ability to get Covenants to work offline.
Arguably one of the most useful changes of the bunch is the removal of some of the materials required for weapon upgrades. Several of these were a genuine pain in the gameplay loop, so with this mod downloaded, when you go to upgrade, you will only be asked for one or more of Dragon Scales, and Regular, Twinkling, or Demon Titanite.
Dark Souls Will Never Truly Die
Dark Souls has lived in the public consciousness for so long, in part because of the community who continues to bring out great new content for the game all these years later. Let’s just hope they see all the attention it still gets and decide to return to the franchise for a fourth run out at some point.
