Disney’s Princess franchise is one of the company’s most profitable and iconic brands, and when it comes to fairy-tale princesses, no one does them quite like Disney. However, DC Comics is officially taking a crack at this goldmine of a franchise with an upcoming release that could mark the beginning of DC’s bid to build its own princess era. And if you think one of DC’s leading princesses looks strikingly similar to a certain little mermaid under the sea, you’re definitely not the only one.
Dating back thousands of years through oral traditions, fairy-tale princess stories are timeless and have endured across generations, capturing the imagination of audiences worldwide. Disney managed to turn this universal storytelling tradition into an estimated 45 billion-dollar franchise, ultimately becoming the face of fairy-tale princesses. However, it looks like DC Comics is ready to bring some competition of its own.
DC Comics has officially announced a new 160-page middle-grade graphic novel from the writing team of Tilly & Susan Bridges and artist Alba Glez titled Princesses of the DC Universe. Set for release on March 2, 2027, the graphic novel will see superheroes and princesses team up in a brand-new adventure starring Wonder Girl Yara Flor.
While this release is still nearly a year away, such an early announcement may hint at DC having big plans, meaning Princesses of the DC Universe could just be the beginning of the publisher pushing more princess-centric stories in the coming years. If you love both superheroes and princesses, it doesn’t get much better than this.
Everything We Know About DC Comics’ New Princess-Themed Era (So Far)
Main Cover by Alba Glez for Princesses of the DC Universe TP (2027)
Princesses of the DC Universe will position Yara Flor as the leader of DC’s newest teen girl superhero squad, including Miss Martian and Natasha “Steel” Irons. While none of these characters are technically princesses, DC will be dusting off the mostly forgotten Princess Maxima to bring some true princess power to the group.
Disney Confirms The Muppets’ Next Major Release Is A Crossover With A $53B Mega-Franchise
There are few things in entertainment more delightfully chaotic than The Muppets, and now the franchise is crossing over with a $53B mega-franchise.
Taking center stage on the main cover for Princesses of the DC Universe, those just glancing at it may initially mistake Maxima for Disney’s Ariel, as both characters share a strikingly similar look and color scheme. With her fiery, long red hair, fair skin, and aquamarine, green, and purple palette, confusing Maxima for Ariel at first glance would be an easy mistake.
However, instead of a story centered on a mermaid princess longing to experience the surface world and fall in love with a prince, Maxima hails from the stars rather than the sea. Her journey will focus on girl power rather than romance, as Yara Flor, Steel, and Miss Martian join her on her voyage back to her alien planet. However, the plot thickens when their ship is stolen and what was a “simple trip turns into an epic adventure!” Hence, it looks like DC Comics is on the verge of launching an epic new princess era, so watch out, Disney!
Yara Flor is very unsure about the responsibility of leading a teen girl superhero squad. Wonder Woman encourages her to try—and even brings donuts—but their first meet-up is crashed by Princess Maxima!
Maxima’s life has been nothing but princess studies, princess duties, and princess training. While planning her coming-of-age ceremony, she realizes she’s been so busy she doesn’t have any friends to invite! No matter: by royal decree, Yara Flor, Steel, and Miss Martian legally have to accompany Maxima to her planet! Surely, they’ll become friends during their road trip…through the stars!
But when their ship is stolen, a simple trip turns into an epic adventure! Can they get their ship back, find some socks, help Superman escape a dungeon, rescue an entire planet, and make it back to Maxima’s home world in time for her ceremony?
Princesses of the DC Universe TP from DC Comics will be available to read on March 2, 2027!
