Rheon famously played Ramsay Bolton, who was one of the most villainous Game of Thrones characters. Ramsay was the bastard son of Roose Bolton (Michael McElhatton) and was first introduced through the torture of Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen) in season 3. After being legitimized by his father and later killing him, Rheon’s character continued to grow more powerful and ruled the North, at least until Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner), Jon Snow (Kit Harington), and their allies defeated him in season 6.

Did you claim the Iron Throne — or lose your head?

In an interview with Radio Times, Rheon shared that he recently started watching the Game of Thrones spinoff series House of the Dragon. He needed to take a break from the fantasy universe, but after a 10-year hiatus, he was ready to jump back in and called the prequel series “fantastic.” Check out his comments below:

I wasn’t quite ready to dive back in and immerse myself before now, but it’s been 10 years and a couple of my friends are in it, so I thought I’d give it a go and it’s fantastic.

Rheon is not the only Game of Thrones star who has been hesitant to watch the spinoff. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who played Jaime Lannister, previously shared that after watching House of the Dragon‘s opening credits and hearing the familiar theme music, he decided it was “too soon” to watch. Lena Headey, who played Cersei Lannister, expressed a similar sentiment of it being “too weird” to tune into the prequel.

Unlike some of his co-stars, though, Rheon has taken the leap to watch House of the Dragon. It is important to note that he exited the flagship series earlier than Coster-Waldau, Headey, and many of the other actors, giving him a few more years of distance from it. Ramsay died in season 6, which was released exactly a decade ago in 2016, while the eighth and final season did not come out until 2019.

Rheon’s praise is consistent with many House of the Dragon reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has an overall critics’ score of 88% and an audience score of 74%. By comparison, Game of Thrones has an overall Tomatometer score of 89% and a Popcornmeter score of 85%, although these averages were brought down significantly by season 8. All the seasons Rheon was in received a minimum score of 93% from critics and a minimum of 91% from audiences.

While Game of Thrones was centered on the war for the Iron Throne after the death of King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy), House of the Dragon revolves around the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, pitting the family into the Black and Green factions as they fight for control over the Iron Throne.

House of the Dragon‘s timeline places the start of the series nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones, though, so the prequel is set long before the birth of Ramsay. With Lord Cregan Stark (Tom Taylor) having sent Roderick Dustin (better known as Roddy the Ruin) and other Northern warriors to fight with the Blacks, and Torrhen Manderly (Dan Fogler) now serving on the Small Council for Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), some of the Northern houses play an important role in the spinoff, but so far House Bolton is not among them.

House of the Dragon releases new episodes on Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
