It’s official: Godzilla is bringing total destruction to San Diego Comic-Con this July. The King of the Monsters is set to unleash chaos on the very fans who helped turn him into one of pop culture’s most enduring icons, and his latest rampage arrives within a brand-new release that longtime fans of the legendary kaiju won’t want to miss.
On July 22, 2026, Godzilla returns for the newest installment of Godzilla vs. America, IDW Publishing’s ongoing anthology miniseries that follows the King of the Monsters as he unleashes destruction across major cities throughout the United States. This latest chapter, Godzilla vs. America: San Diego #1, sends the iconic kaiju straight to San Diego, where his next target is none other than San Diego Comic-Con itself.
The oversized 48-page issue will feature multiple stories from an all-star lineup of creative teams, including Stan Sakai, best known for Usagi Yojimbo, as well as Greg Petre and Fake Petre of Santos Sisters, alongside several other creators. Fans can pick up the issue at local comic shops for $7.99.

Godzilla’s upcoming attack on San Diego won’t be the first time the King of the Monsters has targeted the Golden State of California. Fans who have been keeping up with the ongoing anthology series will remember that, back in spring 2025, after attacking the Windy City of Chicago, the kaiju turned his attention toward Hollywood itself, with Godzilla setting his sights on Los Angeles in IDW Publishing’s Godzilla vs. America: Los Angeles.
Featuring four separate stories set in the filmmaking capital of the world, Godzilla vs. America: Los Angeles #1 showcased everything from a terrified film crew doing everything they could to trick Godzilla to residents using a guide to LA’s transit system in an attempt to escape the monster’s attack. The anthology also stood out because its stories were brought to life by a team of Los Angeles–based comics creators, including Gabriel Hardman (Green Lantern: Earth One, Batman: The Brave and the Bold), J. Gonzo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and Dave Baker (TMNT: Black, White & Green), among others.
Godzilla’s Next Era Begins With Ambitious New 4-Part Series
Godzilla has officially claimed a brand-new series that will deliver a new origin reboot for the legendary kaiju that will be darker than ever before.
Now, instead of terrorizing Hollywood, Godzilla is setting his sights on San Diego, with the official synopsis for the issue teasing: “What’s the biggest thing coming to Comic-Con this year? Comic book and movie announcements? Nope. Comic creators, cosplayers, and celebrities? No! Rising from the depths of San Diego Bay is the king of the monsters, ready for its destructive photo op. Move over, Hall H—this year, all eyes are on Hall G. Join Godzilla as it takes on a roster of San Diego Comic-Con all-stars.”
The timing of this installment’s release is particularly brilliant, as it launches on July 22, just one day before the real San Diego Comic-Con kicks off on July 23. That timing makes the issue even more fun for fans planning to visit San Diego for this year’s convention. Now, the only question left is whether Godzilla’s rampage will remain confined to the comic book pages.
Godzilla vs. America: San Diego #1 from IDW Publishing will be available to read on July 22, 2026!
