Two years after it was supposed to be released, the next Jordan Peele movie gets a promising update.
The upcoming untitled film from the Academy Award winner was originally slated for a December 2024 release, but was pushed to October 2026 due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in 2023. In September 2025, the project was further delayed, with Universal Pictures taking the movie off of their release calendar, and no replacement date was provided.
Now, according to Matthew Belloni in his weekly Puck newsletter, a completed script is in place for Peele’s next movie and Universal is still on board. However, it is still a few months until a release date is expected to be set, along with any news related to casting. All plot details remain under wraps.
The script update is a positive sign of the project still being alive and continuing to move forward after being pulled from the release calendar last year. With no new release date expected to be solidified for a few months, though, it will end up being at least five years, and potentially even longer, between the last movie he directed, 2022’s Nope, and his new film. This is already the longest hiatus yet between the features he’s directed, as Get Out debuted in 2017, followed by Us in 2019.
Universal still being on board is unsurprising, since Peele has a deal with them that doesn’t expire until 2030. As for his production company, MonkeyPaw Productions, this is currently their only greenlit movie. In addition to Get Out, Us, and Nope, MonkeyPaw has previously produced Keanu, BlacKkKlansman, Candyman, Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul, Wendell & Wild, Monkey Man, and Him. For television, they have produced Key & Peele, The Twilight Zone, Lovecraft Country, Hunters, and the docuseries High Horse: Black Cowboy.
All the previous Jordan Peele-directed movies have been commercial and critical hits. Get Out earned $255.4 million worldwide after being made on a $4.5 million production budget. It received Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay, with Peele winning for the last category. Additionally, the film has a near-perfect 98% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and an 86% audience score.
The commercial and critical success continued with Us, which grossed $256 million globally against a $20 million budget, and has a 93% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nope had a budget of $68 million, made $171.2 million worldwide, and has an 83% critics’ score. Neither of these movies received Academy Award nominations, and this was widely considered to be among the biggest snubs in their respective years.
The movies produced by MonkeyPaw but not directed by Jordan Peele have had more mixed results. As indicated by the 30% critics’ score and 55% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Him‘s reviews were negative, and it struggled at the box office, only making $28 million against a $27 million budget. On the other hand, Monkey Man earned $35 million on a $10 million budget, and has an 89% critics’ score.
