A Lady Gaga movie has strutted its way to success on streaming.
Gaga got her start in the world of music but has since become a regular presence in Hollywood. After appearing in multiple episodes of American Horror Story, Gaga starred opposite Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born (2018). The remake won Gaga an Oscar for Best Original Song for “Shallow,” which she cowrote, and she was also nominated for Best Actress. Gaga went on to star in House of Gucci (2021) and Joker: Folie à Deux (2024), and most recently appeared in a hit sequel.
The Devil Wears Prada 2, which Gaga cameos in and contributes three songs to, is now dominating on both Hulu and Disney+. As of writing, the film ranks as the number one title on both platforms in the U.S., beating the likes of Furious, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), General Hospital, Love Island UK, and Kitchen Nightmares.
Directed by David Frankel, the sequel to Devil Wears Prada (2006) also makes the top 10 chart on several VOD platforms, including Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Google Play. This new streaming and VOD success follows the movie’s theatrical release on May 1.
Picking up the story 20 years later, The Devil Wears Prada 2 sees Anne Hathaway return as Andy Sachs, this time to reunite with Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestley as traditional magazine publishing industry declines. The sequel also features the return of Emily Blunt as Emily, Stanley Tucci as Nigel, Tracie Thoms as Lily, and Tibor Feldman as Irv, with newcomers including Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, and Kenneth Branagh.
Though the original film set a high bar, The Devil Wears Prada 2 was a major success in theaters. Made on a budget of about $100 million, the sequel finished its box office run at just over $690 million worldwide, making it a big hit for 20th Century Studios and Disney. The first film, by contrast, grossed $326 million.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 reviews were also generally positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie enjoys a 75% critics’ score, with the Popcornmeter score almost matching at 76%.
Though Gaga doesn’t star in the film, she does appear in a memorable scene in which she faces off against Miranda backstage at a Milan fashion show. The songs she wrote and performed for the sequel include “Runway,” “Shape of a Woman,” and “Glamorous Life.”
It remains unclear if a third movie in the franchise will move forward following The Devil Wears Prada 2‘s ending, but the newfound streaming success of the sequel is a promising sign that audiences would once again turn up at the theater. If a third installment does happen, it’s entirely possible Gaga could return to play a bigger role after her brief appearance in The Devil Wears Prada 2.
