Michael B. Jordan sounded off about Black Panther 3’s newly-announced lead.
At the end of Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, it was announced that David Jonsson will star in Black Panther 3 as the adult T’Challa II. This news follows four years after the adolescent version of the character was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. A couple of days later, Jordan, who played antagonist Erik Killmonger in the first two Black Panther movies, gave his opinion about Jonsson’s casting.
When Entertainment Tonight asked the actor at the Spider-Man: Brand New Day world premiere what he thought of the new Black Panther, he answered, “Oh, love it. It’s amazing. I can’t wait, can’t wait.” Given Jordan’s close professional relationship with writer and director Ryan Coogler, it’s unclear if he knew about Jonsson playing T’Challa II ahead of time, or if he learned about it at the same time as the public. It also remains to be seen if Jordan will reprise Killmonger in some form or fashion (given that Killmonger is dead) for the upcoming Marvel movie.
Jonsson’s previous film and TV appearances include Alien: Romulus, The Long Walk, Industry, and The Road Trip. He’ll be joined in Black Panther 3 by Letitia Wright and Winston Duke, who are reprising Shuri and M’Baku, respectively. Denzel Washington has also been cast in an undisclosed role. Behind the scenes, Nate Moore is returning to produce Black Panther 3 following his exit from Marvel Studios in March 2025.
At the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Shuri learned that her late brother had fathered a son with Lupita Nyong’o’s Nakia sometime prior to Avengers: Infinity War. Though legally known as Toussaint, T’Challa II is his Wakandan name. T’Challa and Nakia decided to keep their son’s existence a secret from the world, and his mother raised him in Haiti. The only other person who knew about T’Challa II was his maternal grandmother, Angela Bassett’s Ramonda, who died during Namor’s attack on Wakanda.
No Black Panther 3 plot details have been revealed yet, including how T’Challa II has gotten older so quickly after Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Ahead of Jonsson’s debut as the character, he’s expected to next be seen in the A24 crime comedy The Chaperones, which also stars Cooper Hoffman, Billy Barratt, Danielle Deadwyler, Alfred Molina, and Tim Meadows. As for Jordan, he was most recently heard voicing Ollie in the Netflix animated movie Swapped, and starting on March 5, 2027, moviegoers will see him in a new remake of The Thomas Crown Affair playing the titular character.
Black Panther 3 arrives in theaters on December 15, 2028. It’s one of two Marvel movies slated for release in 2028, as the Ryan Gosling-led Ghost Rider will come out at a yet-to-be-announced date earlier in the year. Both Wright’s Shuri and Duke’s M’Baku will return in Avengers: Doomsday on December 18, which, combined with 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, will wrap up the MCU’s Multiverse Saga.
