No superhero game rivaled the Batman: Arkham franchise before Marvel’s Spider-Man, and only a few superhero games, such as Marvel’s Midnight Suns and Batman: Arkham Shadow, have rivaled Insomniac’s budding Marvel franchise since. Indeed, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man franchise is widely celebrated, and it’s neat to see that, while it has drawn inspiration from many unique Spider-Man wells, other iterations of the wall-crawler have begun looking to Insomniac for inspiration, too.
The MCU upcoming movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, promises a thrilling new era for Peter Parker as we are invited back into his life following a considerable time skip, after which he’s apparently becoming a whole different kind of Spider-Man altogether. It doesn’t seem to be influenced by the Marvel’s Spider-Man games in terms of its highly secretive narrative, yet Spider-Man: Brand New Day is continuing what Spider-Man: No Way Home started by paying tribute to them in another fun way.
As per Twitter/X, tons of fans have praised Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s new trailer and TV spots for all the ways it represents certain Insomniac-isms, particularly with stuntwork performed in the movie that closely parallels Marvel’s Spider-Man’s traversal and combat animations. For example, Peter performs a spinning dive maneuver from the ceiling to the floor, ensnaring red-clad ninjas in webbing as he torpedoes downward, which is comparable to Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Web Blossom ability.
This ability didn’t make the cut in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, leaving users like Déjà Vu and Overly disappointed. Moreover, fans were quick to notice how the movie’s Spider-Man leaps from a rooftop into a backflip like he does when he’s in pursuit of Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Inner Demons in-game, and performs a quick, evasive flip while low to the ground and also dodging gunfire (in slow motion, as well, like when players execute a well-timed Perfect Dodge).
User Tre writes, “He’s dodging just like he does in the video games!” It’s a testament to how sanitized and largely uninteresting a lot of the previous MCU movies have been for tiny morsels of Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s web-swinging and action sequences to receive such an overwhelmingly positive response, and for these Spider-Man games to be what fans can point toward as a base of reference is incredible.
Before the movie is even out in theaters, fans will be able to enjoy Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s costume in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. And it’ll be exciting to see if the movie has any other fun nods to Marvel’s Spider-Man when it is released later this month.
