Netflix is the perfect streaming service for those looking for spy thriller series, as there are many to enjoy on the streamer, and one of those came out a few years ago and is quite underrated. The spy genre has always been a popular one, contributing to some of the biggest movie franchises of all time: James Bond and Mission: Impossible.
That said, with the creation of streaming and the fact that espionage stories are perfect fits for the popular binge model, several genre shows have found success over the last decade or so. For those looking for spy thrillers, every streaming service these days seems to have at least one such show worth checking out, ranging from Slow Horses to The Night Manager and many more.
A few of Netflix’s best TV shows are spy thriller series, with the streamer finding success with both multi-season shows and limited series in the espionage genre. Charlie Cox’s Treason, Keira Knightley’s Black Doves, Noah Centineo’s The Recruit, Gabriel Basso’s The Night Agent, and many other spy thriller series have become global hits on the streaming service.
That said, I believe that Netflix subscribers should pay more attention to the underrated and aptly titled The Spy. All six episodes of the dark series were released on Netflix at the same time on September 6, 2019. The spy thriller series is intriguing, intense, perfect for a one-night weekend binge, and features a star in a type of role he does not usually play.
Netflix’s Spy Thriller Series With A Major Star Is Worth Watching
The Spy is led by the excellent Sacha Baron Cohen in one of the best performances of his career. The actor has become well-known over the years for his impeccable comedic timing and roles in irreverent comedy movies, such as Ali G Indahouse, Borat, The Dictator, and many more. That is why Netflix’s The Spy came as such a surprise, as the actor shed his comedic star image to take on the role of Mossad agent Eli Cohen, who went on an undercover mission in Syria in the 1960s, slowly building his influence to reach the government’s top level.
Cohen has since shown in projects like Marvel Studios’ Ironheart as the powerful villain Mephisto that he has what it takes to play complex characters in chilling, serious situations. That said, it was Netflix’s The Spy that first brought that to the forefront, with viewers watching as Cohen began to build his network of connections, got to where he wanted to go, and was met with a haunting twist. The Spy stands at a mighty 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a similarly high 85% audience score. Netflix’s spy thriller series is universally beloved.
Why Netflix’s The Spy Is The Perfect One-Night Weekend Binge
For those who have not yet watched Netflix’s The Spy, it is the perfect one-night weekend binge for a few factors. First, like most of Netflix’s shows, it had all six episodes released on the same day, which means it was made to be binged. Second, the spy thriller is a limited series, with the full story of the Mossad top spy Eli Cohen being told by the end of episode 6. Third, Netflix’s The Spy has a total runtime of 319 minutes, so the entire series can be binged in 5.3 hours.
It is harder to watch The Spy in one sitting during the week, but the Netflix spy thriller series becomes the perfect one-night weekend binge, as obligations are usually lowered for most. Additionally, this is a show that you will not want to put away. Cohen delivers a magnetic performance as the title spy, which earned him a Best Actor in a Limited Series or a Movie nomination at the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. The Spy tells a dark, intense, and overall thrilling tale that makes for a must-watch on Netflix.
