Regardless of it being leaked prior, the announcement of a brand-new Blood and Wine-sized expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was tremendously exciting. It should be great to play as Geralt of Rivia again, and the story could be phenomenal no matter where/when it’s set or which characters are involved. Even so, many fans will likely need no excuse to revisit The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in 2027 than to partake in another thrilling game of Gwent.
Gamers’ adoration for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Gwent is palpable, with virtually every minigame in an RPG released afterward being compared to it. The fact that there will be new cards in this upcoming expansion is an even greater boon, with many players likely to ignore the main quest in order to collect them all at their earliest opportunity.
At the end of its Witcher 3: Blood and Wine 10th Anniversary Stream video, CD Projekt Red teased a few details about The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past during a quick Q&A after officially announcing it. As for whether there will be new gwent minigame cards in the expansion, expert community and social media manager Amelia Korzycka succinctly responded:
“I mean, guys, Witcher 3 equals Gwent—more Gwent coming. Simple as that. More Gwent.”
Reddit user Foreign_Kale8773 admits that the addictive deckbuilding minigame factors chiefly into their love for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt: “Gwent is one of the reasons I keep replaying.” Similarly, user ProfessionalNew8222 writes, “Inject anything Gwent straight into my veins.”
CD Projekt Red obviously knows how paramount Gwent is to The Witcher’s identity now, and is right to capitalize on its hype. Thus, announcing new cards as early as it did was a stroke of genius, as Gwent alone may be why some players are highly anticipating The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past next year.
It’s not as if this upcoming expansion receiving brand-new Gwent cards was a far-fetched theory before its announcement, as both of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s previous expansions got new cards, too. Rather, while Blood and Wine also debuted the Skellige gwent faction deck, user jacob1342 isn’t convinced that Songs of the Past will introduce another new deck: “I think they will just add new cards to existing decks, like HoS did.”
We know that The Witcher 4 will feature Gwent, as well, and how this fourth mainline installment tackles it (perhaps changing its presentation, theme, or gameplay) will be interesting to see.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Songs of the Past is scheduled to be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S in 2027.
