The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 is introducing an exciting new character.
Created by Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, Prime Video’s epic fantasy adventure series wrapped up its sophomore outing in summer 2024, setting up Middle-earth’s further fall into darkness. The Rings of Power season 3 is now confirmed to premiere later this year, bringing with it new characters and exciting events from J.R.R. Tolkien’s source material.
Per Empire Magazine (via GamesRadar+), Elros, Elrond’s brother, will be among the new additions for The Rings of Power season 3. Robert Aramayo, who plays Elrond in the show, will play the new character in a flashback scene, which is said to reveal more about Numenor’s founding.
In addition to serving as the first king of Numenor, Elros also has a connection to Aragorn. The half Elf is one of Aragorn’s direct ancestors. Elros, who chose to live as a mortal being after being given a choice by the Valar, ruled Numenor for 410 years, dying at 500.
The Rings of Power takes place in the Second Age, centuries before Aragorn’s time. The show has a five-season plan in place and is expected to culminate with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, where Isildur slices the One Ring from Sauron’s finger. Isildur is also one of Aragorn’s direct ancestors.
Though Aragorn isn’t expected to make an appearance in the Prime Video show, he is expected to return in the upcoming The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. Directed by Andy Serkis, the Middle-earth film will take place between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, chronicling Aragorn’s attempts to find Gollum before he can reveal the Ring’s location to Sauron.
Viggo Mortensen memorably played Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it has now been confirmed that Jamie Dornan will take on the role for the upcoming film. The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters on December 17, 2027.
It doesn’t sound as if Elros will have a significant role in The Rings of Power season 3, but his inclusion is among several changes expected for the Prime Video series. Following the season 2 ending, season 3 is confirmed to pick up five years later, with Sauron having accumulated more power.
In addition to Aramayo, season 3 will feature the return of actors including Morfydd Clark (Galadriel), Daniel Weyman (Gandalf), Charlie Vickers (Sauron, Ismael Cruz Córdova (Arondir), Owain Arthur (King Durin IV), Sophia Nomvete (Queen Disa), Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Míriel), and Benjamin Walker (Gil-galad), among others.
New additions for season 3 include Jamie Campbell Bower as Celeborn, Eddie Marsan as Thráin, Andrew Richardson as Anárion, Zubin Varla as Khamûl the Easterling, and Adam Young as Marnûkh. Simon Pegg is also confirmed to be lending his voice to the show as the Balrog.
It remains to be seen how the Elros flashback scene will come about, but season 3 is evidently set to feature some exciting new additions. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 premieres on November 11, 2026.
