Doctor Doom will change the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever when he arrives this December.

While he brought Iron Man to life in the MCU timeline, Robert Downey Jr. is making his return to the franchise in a very different role. As Phase 6 will see Victor von Doom take on Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, the former Tony Stark actor will be the one to bring the famous villain to life.

Avengers: Doomsday is less than six months from opening in theaters, as the world waits for the massive team-up installment. As the marketing is slowly underway, Downey Jr. re-shared a major poster on his Instagram stories from the talented graphic designer Bosslogic. Check it out below:

As the Avengers: Doomsday cast has done additional photography, Joe and Anthony Russo are getting ready to start principal photography on Avengers: Secret Wars, which is going into production this summer. The 2027 installment will be the final entry for Phase 6 as it concludes The Multiverse Saga.

Downey Jr. will be back as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Secret Wars, following his major proper debut in Doomsday. The actor’s social media posting is also coming at an interesting time, as San Diego Comic-Con is approaching in just a couple of weeks.

While Marvel Studios has not confirmed it yet, the ensemble entry has been rumored to be present at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con for a big Hall H presentation. As they have yet to release an official full Avengers: Doomsday trailer, the popular comic book convention would be the proper place

The MCU feature will see the heroes from Earth-616 coming together with the Fantastic Four, following 2025’s First Steps, as well as the X-Men, with several Fox-Marvel actors reprising their respective mutants. While multiple characters have been announced for the 2026 adventure, there are still many surprises left to be unveiled.

The biggest mystery, thus far, about Avengers: Doomsday, is how they will explain Downey Jr. being Doctor Doom in whatever reality he comes from. Many had always imagined that by the time Victor would be introduced to the MCU, it would be a different actor who hadn’t already played a major character in the franchise.

Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars are paving the way for a reset of the MCU rather than a reboot. In July 2025, Kevin Feige stated at the time that “Reboot is a scary word. Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines. X-Men is where that will happen next. They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don’t belong. That’s the universal story of mutants, and that is where we’re going.”
