A secret Avatar: The Last Airbender project is in the works.
A new project from the fantasy franchise has been teased at San Diego Comic-Con by the studio involved, who offer details about the series’ next chapter. The beloved animated series has continued its expansion into new forms in recent years, including the upcoming Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender movie. The animated film chronicles a new story that takes place when Team Avatar are adults, yet still decades before the events of The Legend of Korra. The movie comes to Paramount+ on July 25, 2026.
Speaking with GamesRadar at SDCC, Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko confirmed that an all-new project in the franchise is currently in the works. While the pair didn’t offer up much detail, they did confirm the upcoming project is a new TV show. Information about the project is being kept under wraps, but the duo explain how the franchise’s home on TV makes them more inclined to envision projects that are on that side of the aisle.
Check out what DiMartino and Konietzko had to say below:
Michael Dante DiMartino: There’s stuff in development, just TV shows in production, but not features at the moment.
Bryan Konietzko: We have another secret thing in production, but yeah, it’s on the series side. To be clear, we’re series people, so that’s okay to us. Features is a new thing to us.
Although a new movie is arriving in just a few days, the TV side of the franchise is far from done. On the animated side of things is the new Avatar: Seven Havens, following Pavi, an Earthbender who’s the next Avatar after Korra. She is blamed for an apocalyptic event that left the world in shambles as she tries to find her twin, Nisha. Season 1 premieres October 9, 2026 on Paramount+ and will consist of 13 episodes, while season 2 acts as the second half of the story.
However, it seems the creators’ new show is an entirely different series to Seven Havens, but one that still connects to the larger timeline. The franchise is also continued by its live-action Netflix adaptation, with Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 having been released on June 25, 2026. Season 3 has already been filmed, but a release date has yet to be confirmed. Even though the live-action series will end, it’s clear the creative team behind the animated shows have plenty more story prepared for the future.
The news of another TV series follows a major leak for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, which was released online in full HD by hackers in April of this year. This caused the movie to be pushed up from its October 9, 2026 release date to July 25. So far, reviews of Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender have been positive, the movie earning an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 22 reviews. This is a positive sign for how the animated universe will trend as new projects are revealed and released.
Even though the creators haven’t offered too much more information about their next Avatar: The Last Airbender follow-up, it seems like there’s a plethora of stories left to be told in the franchise’s universe. Although there’s no telling what’s around the corner, the co-creators’ passion signals plenty of compelling ideas and stories are right around the corner.
