A criminally underseen Sherlock Holmes movie is sleuthing its way onto Netflix next week.
Few fictional detectives have left a footprint as large as Sherlock Holmes. Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the legendary sleuth has inspired countless screen adaptations, from the action-packed films (2009, 2011) starring Robert Downey Jr. to the acclaimed BBC series (2010–2017) starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Ian McKellen’s reflective take on the character from 2015. Now, one of his most overlooked cinematic outings will finally get another shot at the spotlight when the 2018 film arrives on Netflix next week.
Eight years after its release, Holmes & Watson officially drops on Netflix next week. Written and directed by Etan Cohen, the 2018 comedy stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the famed detective duo as they investigate a mysterious murder at Buckingham Palace. Rebecca Hall, Rob Brydon, Kelly Macdonald, Steve Coogan and Ralph Fiennes also star in supporting roles.
Now, Holmes & Watson is coming to Netflix on August 1. The movie is currently streaming on Paramount+ and is also available to buy or rent on digital platforms, such as Prime Video, from only $3.99. See what else is coming to Netflix in August below:
Holmes & Watson marked the third collaboration between Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly after Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) and Step Brothers (2008), and their first without Adam McKay in the director’s chair, who instead served as a co-producer.
In addition to the aforementioned actors, the cast includes Lauren Lapkus, Pam Ferris, Hugh Laurie, Bella Ramsey, Scarlet Grace, Noah Jupe, Braun Strowman, Billy Zane, Bruce Buffer, Michael Buffer, Hector Bateman-Harden, and Codie-Lei Eastick.
Holmes & Watson reviews were overwhelmingly negative, resulting in a terrible 10% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics claiming that even the darkest and most depraved corners of London cannot match the sheer horror of the famed detective duo’s adventures in the film.
With a troubling 26% audience score, the film also underperformed at the box office, grossing just $41.9 million worldwide against its $42 million budget, and in turn, is widely considered to be one of the worst movies ever made. Reports from the press highlighted numerous occasions where audience members left screenings before the film had ended.
Despite being one of the worst movies ever made, Holmes & Watson remains criminally underseen. Whether you want to watch it because of how bad it is or are willing to give it a fair shake, it’s coming to Netflix next week.
