With Valve finally announcing the release date for the Steam Machine just yesterday, there is just one question that remains: how much will it cost? After all, considering the ever-growing cost of hardware and components in recent years, it is a fair question, but the answer may turn out to be a lot better than we had been initially hoping, at least according to a recent rumor.
We finally know that the Steam Machine is set to launch “this summer”, according to an announcement by Valve which took place overnight. However, with the upcoming PC/console always set to launch in the first half of 2026, the date did not come as any surprise. What many did notice, however, was that Valve did not share the price tag, with many believing this did not bode well for its potential cost.
In the official blog post shared by Valve, it also took the time to explain what exactly the Steam Machine is and what fans can expect from the little console that packs a punch.
Steam Machine is a gaming device that enables powerful PC gaming in a small form-factor. It runs SteamOS, Valve’s operating system that’s optimized for gaming, with fast suspend / resume and cloud saves. Steam Machine has a discrete semi-custom AMD desktop class CPU and GPU, and is roughly 6 times more powerful than Steam Deck.
As you can tell, it is pretty much a powerful PC in console form, allowing you to access your Steam library and play from the comfort of your sofa via controller, or even hook up to your monitor to use as a PC. With this much power, and the recent news that the price of the Steam Deck had increased exponentially, it is no wonder that users are worried about the potential cost of the Steam Machine. However, a recent rumor suggests that the price may be “nowhere near” what we had potentially estimated.
Since its announcement, many have estimated the Steam Deck to cost a minimum of $1000, considering it gives you the power of a decent gaming PC in console form, and we all know the cost of PC components in recent years. However, according to Insider Gaming’s Executive Editor Mike Straw, he reveals that he has heard “rumblings” of the Steam Machine’s price tag, and it is “nowhere near” what Valve originally had planned. As we do not know what Valve originally had planned, there is not much to go on.
“Valve has confirmed the Steam Machine will launch “this summer” after pushing it out of spring,” Straw’s Twitter/X post reads. “A price, however, hasn’t been announced. I’ve heard rumblings that the price is “nowhere near” where it was originally planned, but don’t know what that is.”
Put simply, we do not know how much the Steam Machine will cost, but with its release just around the corner, we will no doubt be finding out soon. If Straw’s claim is correct, however, we could be looking at the PC/console hybrid either breaking the bank, or leaving us pleasantly surprised.
