Teenage life is already a chaotic swirl of hormones, heartbreaks, and identity crises, but Sterling Point takes that familiar formula and flips Annie Jacobson’s entire world on its head. In the new Prime Video series (which drops all eight episodes on August 5 for maximum binge potential), 17-year-old Annie (played by Ella Rubin) is forced to confront a life-altering family secret that no amount of typical teen angst could prepare her for. What follows is a messy, emotionally charged coming-of-age story packed with secrets, new connections, and just the right amount of dramatic chaos.
The series begins with color grading that would make Twilight fans weep in remembrance, before we are greeted by Rubin’s character Annie. With a new Olivia Rodrigo song playing in the background, it’s clear the creators know who their target audience is, and no one is complaining. While this isn’t an adaptation of a novel, which is Prime Video’s usual series of choice for this genre, it does still honor other series, which have become huge for the streaming service.
Annie’s carefully ordered New York existence shatters when she uncovers a major secret her adoptive father Steven (played by Jay Duplass) has kept from her and her opinionated fraternal twin brother Connor (played by Keen Ruffalo). In typical wealthy teen fashion, Annie leaves a note for her father saying she’s headed for Thailand, and books a trip to Canada instead.
It doesn’t take too long before she meets Jacob Whiteduck-Lavoie’s character, Ellis, who is piloting a seaplane to take Annie to her new and unexpectedly not-so-humble abode. Of course, this first meet-cute clearly shows how Ellis is bachelor number one for the young teen who has just discovered a massive family secret…perfect timing. Annie soon discovers the entire island has been left to her, and what is a girl to do but catch up with the locals?
Sterling Point’s Cast Makes An Otherwise Messy Series Into Something Far Richer
The series screams wealth, mess, and angst, which at first feels like a fever dream you can’t quite keep up with. The picturesque landscape certainly makes up for the fast pace by providing some calm amongst the chaos. With stars such as Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Missi Pyle, Sterling Point gets that much more intriguing and certainly is an entirely new concept full of questions, mystery, and more.
I, for one, was enamored by the young cast and wanted to find out exactly what secrets the adults were hiding. The cringey dialogue and cliché teen angst become bearable once you’re fully invested and desperate to learn the truth. Still, a few scenes yank you right out of the moment, including one where Bo Bragason’s Oona struggles to cut a tomato in a way that eerily echoes the viral moment of Kendall Jenner failing to cut cucumbers. It’s a minor distraction, but it pulls you out of the heart of the story.
However, Oona and the supporting cast do have incredible moments littered throughout the season. Amélie Hoeferle is really the star of the show for me the moment she enters the chaos. Her character, Ramona, is 16-years-old and dealing with adult situations and feelings that no teenager has the capability to handle, and yet Hoeferle truly excels in showcasing exactly how a normal teenager would react and cope with these life-altering moments.
Sterling Point screams wealth, mess, and angst, which at first feels like a fever dream you can’t quite keep up with.
Hoeferle is previously known for her roles in Night Swim and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, but I hope to see her in a lot more, especially given her performance in Sterling Point. However, it doesn’t mean that Rubin isn’t also a worthy lead, because her performance is also a roller-coaster of so many different emotions, including one pivotal scene towards the end of the season where your heart physically hurts watching what Annie is dealing with internally.
Sterling Point’s Uneven Start Transforms Into A Truly Emotional Journey
The themes of love, loss, family, and friendship are littered throughout Sterling Point, and the romance becomes almost entirely secondary, where the true power of the series is actually family. The teen angst suddenly becomes something so much more as these teenage characters go through a roller-coaster that many would simply be unable to comprehend or even cope with normally, myself included. The mix of the older and younger cast delivers some powerful and moving moments that will tug at your heartstrings and make you want to call your mom.
The last few episodes of Sterling Point make the entire series worth watching. The beginning of Prime Video’s series is a tough watch, but it appears that as the cast fully experiment in their new roles, and you become immersed in the characters, it is hard to switch off. I found myself rooting for Ramona, Annie, Oona, and a lot of the characters when, initially, they appeared somewhat obnoxious and hard to even watch. That friction is entirely the point, and it’s what turns Sterling Point into an emotional tailspin full of secrets and hard-won realizations.
I don’t regret watching this series, and I’m sure many of the audience will agree. If you’re a fan of cheesy YA drama full of cringey dialogue, an iconic soundtrack, and gut-wrenchingly powerful performances, then it’s a no-brainer to add Sterling Point to your watchlist for the perfect binge-watch session. It is certainly an imperfect series, but that’s what makes it all the richer and far more dynamic to watch as the audience.
There are no official renewal noises from Prime Video, but it would seem like a waste of such a good build-up to suddenly leave these characters on the island without revisiting them. Sterling Point is a diamond in the rough, and the streaming giant once again proves why it remains one of the best at delivering this exact brand of emotionally messy teen drama.
