Pokémon Fans Losing It Over Mysterious HeartGold & SoulSilver Teaser

I constantly go back and forth on my favorite Pokémon Generation. I’ve been playing since the original game’s release week, and it feels like every new Generation could be my favorite in some way. But if I had to pick which generation was the “best,” it might be Gen 2, specifically the remade versions of HeartGold and SoulSilver, which were remakes of Gold and Silver from the original Game Boy Color run.

The second Gen still holds up considerably well, both in terms of gameplay and the selection of Pokémon that are available across the two entries. Plus, Pokémon Crystal was a nice way to extend the Generation a bitandserved as one of the first “third versions” in Pokémon history, alongside Pokémon Yellow.

It seems like the second Generation isn’t over yet. Based on a new teaser on X, fans are going wild.

Thanks to a new post on X by Poké Times (the official Japanese Pokémon social account), fans are perking up after showing off the fabled confrontation with Red, from the postgame of Pokémon Gold & Silver. As one of the most memorable and legendary endings of the series, the postgame in Gen 2 allows players to explore Kanto all over again, complete with rematches and a special endgame boss fight against Red: the “Ash Ketchum” of the gaming continuity.

While this tease might amount to nothing, fans are already speculating: “I wonder if there’ll be a Gold and Silver remake or port… If there was a scrapped Gold and Silver remake that was maybe planned for three generations, I’d love for it to come out as a Switch port.”

That’s the question on everyone’s minds. “Please make the content currently locked away in DS software playable on the Switch! I beg you! I’ll do anything,” another writes. We’re still waiting for the Gen 5 remakes as well, so Game Freak hopefully has a lot planned for the future, including these Gen 2 ports.

Others are just happy recalling what is known as one of the most shocking events in Pokémon game history: “The creepiness when you encounter them. The strength of the Pokémon they unleash. Mom’s line about no news being proof that you’re doing well. My favorite scene in the Pokémon series.”

Another fan muses on the idea of Red retreating into the mountains: “People were saying stuff like ‘It’s the ghost of the former champion!?’ and all that, but the fact that the protagonist from the previous game was just genuinely holed up in the mountains too much and ended up with social anxiety is still hilarious.”

If you haven’t played Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver yet, it’s worth tracking down on DS if you can swing it. It would be a shame for one of the best Generations of the series to languish on the Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and the DS, so an eShop port at some point on Switch is ideal.
