The Boys Official Return Met With Franchise-Low Review Scores

There’s absolutely no doubt that The Boys is one of the most successful programmes in Prime Video history, with the gross out superhero satire doing more than enough to earn all of the plaudits it received. That said, after five seasons, the show’s good run came to an end, and with the cancellation of Gen V after two seasons, all we have to look forward to on the television front is the upcoming release of Vought Rising in 2027.

While we wait for that, those in charge of the franchise would be fools to not capitalize on the popularity of the series, before it fades rhe further away we get from the show’s finale. One way they were planning to do that was with new VR game The Boys: Trigger Warning, but it hasn’t gone down as well with fans and critics as the developer would have been hoping.

Over on MetaCritic, you can now find the aggregated reviews for The Boys: Trigger Warning (which just got a re-release for PSVR2), and at the time of writing, critic reviews sit at an average of 67 or “Mixed,” while the user score is considerably lower and getting worse as the hours go on. That makes it comfortably the lowest reception of any of The Boys releases so far, across any medium.

The professional reviews cite technical issues that often limit the gameplay experience, as well as a lack of challenge as the game goes on, and odd design choices that hamper player controls. All fair criticisms of the game by all accounts, but it will no doubt come as a disappointment to those in charge of the franchise, who presumably would be looking to continue their run of good form.

At the same time, the game has drawn additional condemnation from fans the world over, after the TV series referenced the Prophet Muhammad in its final episode. Though there are no reports of that line featuring in the game itself, the fact that it comes from the same franchise has seen the review page used by those who want to make their feelings known.

While the game very clearly isn’t for everyone, if you are a fan of the franchise then it’s available now to try out for yourself. It is a VR game though, so if you haven’t got the setup available for that, then The Boys: Trigger Warning is likely going to be out of reach for the time being.
