For Power Rangers fans, all eyes have been on Hasbro and Disney’s upcoming Disney+ reboot of the TV show. However, although this has been in development for a while, the franchise is far from dead. Off-screen, the franchise has been kept alive thanks to some incredible new comic book runs by BOOM! Studios, and the most exciting of these is arriving in less than a month.
A key reason readers fall in love with BOOM!’s Power Rangers comics is how they reinvent familiar heroes, and none benefited more than Tommy Oliver. Stories such as Shattered Grid, Soul of the Dragon, and Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return transformed him into one of the franchise’s richest and most complex characters. Those books gave Tommy greater depth than ever before, and now BOOM! is bringing the iconic original Green Ranger back once again.
Power Rangers Green is an upcoming Power Rangers comic series set in an alternate future where Tommy is the last surviving Ranger. Following the celebrated release of issue #0 on Free Comic Book Day in May, issue #1 arrives on August 5, 2026. The latest BOOM! Power Rangers comic is continuing the legacy of Shattered Grid and Soul of the Dragon by reinventing Tommy yet again, although this time he’s more isolated and vulnerable than ever before.
Power Rangers Green Brings Tommy Oliver Back, But Not As Fans Know Him
While the studio has explored several Tommy Oliver-centered stories, BOOM!’s latest series is taking the Green Ranger in a very different direction. Rather than revisiting the familiar days of Angel Grove, Power Rangers Green is set in an alternate future where Tommy is the last living Power Ranger. The team is gone, the world has changed, and the legendary hero has spent years trying to leave his battles behind.
At the start of Power Rangers Green, Tommy is simply trying to live a quiet and peaceful life with Alpha 5 and his adopted daughter, Mirella Vex, inside the empty head of the Dragon Zord. However, once Goldar returns and asks for his help, Tommy is once again pulled into conflict. This time, though, there is no Zordon guiding him, and no team of fellow Rangers standing beside him. The Green Ranger is completely alone. He may be older and wiser, but he’s also vulnerable and isolated in a way he’s never been before.
The idea of a lone Green Ranger navigating a dystopian future is unlike any Power Rangers so far. It also perfectly suits Tommy, as BOOM! has repeatedly shown he can anchor stories far darker than any other character thanks to his complex history. Power Rangers Green may not feature the Tommy of the MMPR TV show era, but it could be one of the deepest explorations of his character so far.
2026 Has Been A Big Year For Power Rangers Comics
The arrival of Power Rangers Green in August is exciting enough on its own, but it is only one part of a surprisingly huge year for the franchise’s comics. While Power Rangers remains absent from screens as Hasbro and Disney continue developing their Disney+ reboot, BOOM! Studios is ensuring the franchise lives on.
The previous comic book run, Power Rangers Prime, wrapped up in April. Rather than slowing down, however, BOOM! immediately launched three fresh titles that effectively rebooted its comic universe and made 2026 one of the busiest years the franchise has seen in a long time.
The first of those releases was the new Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series in June, which returned the classic team to center stage while offering a fresh jumping-on point for readers. A month later came Power Rangers Unlimited, which draws Rangers from across the timeline into a legion of all-star teams. That makes Power Rangers Green the third ongoing Power Rangers comic release of the year. Taken together, the trio demonstrate how healthy the franchise’s comic book side has become.
For fans eagerly waiting for the Disney+ Power Rangers reboot, BOOM! is keeping the morphin’ grid alive. Between the rebooted Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic, the expansive possibilities of Power Rangers Unlimited, and Tommy’s lonely final adventure in Power Rangers Green, there has rarely been a better time to be a Power Rangers fan.
