Warning: Spoilers for The Devil’s Mouth
Creature features come in many forms in movies, and have done so for decades, with The Devil’s Mouth being yet another noteworthy entry into the genre. A group facing untold threats in the form of a non-human adversary is a plot as old as the medium itself, and we’ve seen everything from sci-fi villains like the Xenomorph or Predator to crocodiles. The industry also boasts some terrifying spider movies.
Many great titles in the genre prey on the audience’s real-world fears, and few are as thoroughly explored as sharks. Jaws remains arguably one of the greatest creature features ever made, with a phenomenal cast and some incredible camera effects modern movies still take advantage of. It’s a nigh-impossible act to follow, but many shark movies put their own spin on the genre.
The Devil’s Mouth is a survival horror thriller with a hungry bull shark at its core, starring Kathryn Newton as Sara alongside her best friend Max, played by Lana Condor. Both are part of a group on a guided tour to the Devil’s Mouth. However, they quickly get more than they bargained for when they arrive. The movie tells a predictable story in the genre, though it also explores the group dynamic and how it changes as they realize how perilous the situation has become.
What Is The Devil’s Mouth And Why Is There A Shark There?
While The Devil’s Mouth is absolutely a horror survival movie, its namesake isn’t actually related to sharks in any way. The film follows a group of friends on holiday in Thailand. They don’t seem like thrill seekers per se, but they have booked a guided tour through a unique cave system in the jungle.
The group accesses the cave system via kayak, and the landmark earned its name because the cave mouth has sharp, pointed stalactites on the ceiling and others protruding from the water. They look like rows of intimidating teeth above and below. Ultimately, it’s a chamber in a freshwater cave system, and Wat (Tayme Thapthimthong), the tour guide, explains that there is more than one route through.
The Green route is easier, though one person in the group, Max, encourages them to tackle the more challenging Red route instead. The cave system is full of deep water, so the group must swim the entire way. Wat also explains that a cave near the Devil’s Mouth is called Skeleton Cave. There was once a village above, though it fell into the sinkhole, and there are human bones below.
We never explicitly see a shark enter, though the group stumbles across a cave full of dead sea animals floating in the freshwater. The group later guesses that the shark entered via a narrow passageway from the sea, and it can survive the mix of fresh and salt water. One entrance seems high off the ground, though Wat does mention recent heavy storms, which may have led the shark into the cave system.
Who Dies In The Devil’s Mouth And Who Survives?
As you’d expect from any good creature feature, the shark in The Devil’s Mouth racks up quite the body count by the end of the movie. The group is already at a massive disadvantage with a man-eating shark below, and there are very few places above the water large enough to stand, let alone travel. With this in mind, here’s every death in The Devil’s Mouth in the order they occur.
A Diver Is The First To Die
The shark’s first victim in The Devil’s Mouth isn’t actually a part of the main friend group. He’s a diver in the cave system, and the shark attacks him deep below the surface. The group is completely unaware until one person dives and notices a lot of blood.
Wat finds the diver’s damaged mask with a shark tooth wedged inside and quickly concludes that they are not safe in the cave and must leave immediately.
Greg Is The First Victim In The Group
We learn that Greg (Gavin Casalegno) has a phobia of blood, which is an issue, as Adrienne (Tommi Rose) suffers a bloody injury while traversing the caves. A tour guide suggests he wear a life jacket, and that’s when the shark attacks.
The shark grabs Greg by the legs, but doesn’t pull him under. Instead, his friends can only watch in horror as the shark drags him into sharp rocks above the surface, smashing him into each one. The shark eventually carries him below, leaving everyone else on a small rock above the water in shock.
Wat Abandons The Group
Wat is the most experienced cave diver in the movie, but decides to take his chances with the shark alone. The group starts to argue while marooned on the small rock, bickering about the best route out of the cave system.
The tour guide decides to leave them completely lost and swims away on his own. Wat eventually reaches a narrow gorge, and that’s where the shark attacks. He desperately tries to clamber up the walls, but the shark bites his leg and pulls him into the water.
Adrienne’s Blood May Have Attracted The Shark
Adrienne had previously sustained a leg injury and received some nasty cuts while trying to rescue Greg. Her wounds drip blood into the water as they wait, attracting the shark. Adrienne falls into the water as the group argues.
The shark is briefly trapped in a small gap in the rocks, but quickly frees itself. It locates Adrienne moments later, pulling her under, and we never see her again.
James Escapes Becoming Shark Food
James (Nico Hiraga) is Max’s boyfriend and meets his demise in the cave, though not from a shark bite. He gets trapped between some rocks as the group navigates the narrow caves. Sara and Max attempt to give him air, but they cannot free him.
In his final moments, James tells Max he loves her and to keep going. The group does not have air tanks in The Devil’s Mouth, and he drowns soon after as his friends have no choice but to leave him.
Max Dies Trying To Reach The Exit Despite Sara’s Efforts
Max is arguably the most insufferable member of the group, responsible for a brief dream sequence which is one of the highlights of The Devil’s Mouth. Sara and Max must climb to reach the ocean entrance, but Max has broken her hand.
Sara says she will return with help, but Max insists on attempting the climb with her injury. She tries to help Max with a rope, but the shark appears and attacks Max, taking Sara along for the ride. Sara is forced to cut the rope to survive, leaving her as the lone survivor.
How Does Sara Survive The Devil’s Mouth?
Sara is dragged far away from the ocean entrance after the shark takes Max. She notices a thin piece of rock, like a support beam, near her and hangs on it with her feet in the water. Then, Sara cuts her own arm to attract the creature.
Her plan is quite farfetched, even by creature feature standards, but she coaxes the shark into ramming into the rock multiple times. The shark jumps at Sara on its final attempt, but she drops into the water while the impact causes rocks to fall, crushing it.
Sara is dazed, but survives the ordeal and ends up in a cave with a hole in a wall with daylight streaming through. She climbs toward the hole and onto a ledge and yells as the camera pans out, showing that she’s close to the coastline.
What The Devil’s Mouth Ending Means

The ending to The Devil’s Mouth is tough to interpret, though Sara is the only person to survive the ordeal. Sara triumphantly screams as she reaches the ledge, elated that she has escaped with her life. However, it also looks like Sara could be trapped there as the camera pans out, showing that she is high above the water. Still, we’ve also seen that Sara is a skilled climber, and she has no debilitating injuries.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Newton explained what Sara was feeling as she escaped. “That moment was very guttural and animalistic. I’m the apex predator,” she explained. “Yeah, I lost everything, but I’m on top. I beat the shark. I won. I’m a shark killer!“
Newton also explained that the ending is meant to be hopeful, symbolizing that her life is just beginning. “When you’re young and learn your power, that’s really when your life begins,” she said. It’s also a poignant moment of the film, as the group always followed Max’s plans, no matter how absurd they were, which arguably got them into such a bleak situation. This final act was something Sara had to do on her own.
