Tom Holland has suggested one famous actor would be a solid candidate to become his successor for the role of Spider-Man after Holland finishes his time as the MCU‘s Peter Parker – and he seems to have picked a perfect candidate. While Tom Holland is by no means the only talented actor to have played Spider-Man thus far, he may now in fact be the most famous to have played the role, thanks to the prominence of the MCU timeline during the course of the past near two decades.
With the Spider-Man MCU trilogy having shot its web-swinging hero to staggering heights of fame – and with Spider-Man: Brand New Day set to follow up on that in a major way – Holland’s time as Spider-Man has been both well regarded, and a huge hit in terms of box office success, which means he’ll be a decidedly tough act to follow when it becomes time for him to hand over the crime-fighting keys to someone else.
However, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible for any actor to do so, and indeed, there are a wealth of talented prospects who could some day live up to the precedent Tom Holland set for the role. Interestingly enough, Holland himself has even named one actor that he thinks could be a stellar candidate to become his successor when it’s time for him to hand his Spider-Man costume in, and it’s a choice that’s hard to argue with.
Tom Holland Suggested A Famous New Actor Would Be An Ideal Successor For The Role Of Spider-Man
During an interview with Esquire, the matter of who could take on the Spider-Man role after MCU star Tom Holland was brought up to the actor, who also mentioned his interest in remaining attached to the hero’s story after his tenure as Peter Parker ends, be that as a producer or in another capacity.
When discussing who currently seems as though they would be an ideal fit for the role, Holland referenced one young actor who recently entered into the spotlight, stating: “Owen Cooper would be awesome… Obviously he’s super-talented and the talk of the town right now.“
With Holland’s latter comments being in reference to Cooper’s role in Netflix drama Adolescence – which saw Owen Cooper play the complex role of a teen who kills one of his classmates after she rejects his romantic advances – it’s fair to say the MCU star is on the money about the prospect of the newer actor being able to further kickstart his career and demonstrate his acting talents in the role of Spider-Man, even if this would require a very different performance to the one that has already won Cooper so many awards.
Why Owen Cooper Would Be A Good Successor For The Role Of Spider-Man
While Adolescence demonstrated Owen Cooper’s talents in a far more serious and somber story and role than we conventionally see Spider-Man in on-screen, the show did provide ample opportunity to see how well Cooper is able to get inside the head of the character he plays as, and how he’s able to provide nuance and believability subsequently when he plays a role.
This ability would be massively helpful for taking on the role of Spider-Man. With so many stellar actors having played the role previously, Cooper’s acting talent appears as though it would still allow him to make the role his own, and provide a sense of nuance to a theoretical performance as the Marvel hero that could ensure it feels distinct enough while still keeping true to what makes Spider-Man so iconic.
Crucially, Owen Cooper’s age means that the actor would also be a solid successor for Tom Holland given the actor wouldn’t have to play the role too soon, as he could take over as Spider-Man even if Holland plays the role for a fair few years to come – meaning this prospective casting would also make sense on a practical level, too.
