In recent years, no anime genre has dominated quite like Isekai. While major shōnen action titles, like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man, will always find the spotlight, the last decade or so has seen the number of Isekai shows rapidly increase with every passing anime season. If there’s a living creature or even a household item out there, it’s likely that an anime protagonist has reincarnated into it.
Though the genre isn’t quite as popular outside of Japan as it is in its country of origin, global anime fans have not been able to ignore Isekai, and more and more of them have found themselves entirely entranced by it as new series continue to air. Some shows take themselves seriously, while others take advantage of the genre’s well-known tropes for a comedic or overly dramatic effect.
As Isekai continues to rise in popularity, fans have debated with one another about which show is the genre’s undeniable best. While there are plenty of candidates to choose from, Re:Zero – Starting Life in Another World just achieved something very few other anime series have ever accomplished.
Re:Zero Season 4: Episode 11 Debuted on IMDb with a Perfect 10/10 Rating
Since its premiere a decade ago, Re:Zero has firmly placed itself in ‘greatest Isekai series’ discussions amongst fans around the world. The series utilizes the classic Isekai formula, following Natsuki Subaru, a shut-in protagonist who, one day, is transported to a fantasy world while crossing the street. What helps Re:Zero stand out among its peers, however, is its framing of ‘being Isekai’d’ as an inherently bad thing. After being transported, Subaru gains the ability to restart his journey from a certain checkpoint each time he dies.
At first glance, such a power might not seem too bad. Immortality is rather useful in a dangerous fantasy world crawling with dangerous, supernatural beings. However, Subaru frequently experiences gruesome, traumatizing deaths, and is forced to relive lost days during which he might’ve made meaningful connections or progress within the world. Season 4 is, by far, Subaru’s worst experience yet, as he loses all memories he made since entering the fantasy world, and has to cope with discovering his situation all over again, this time with people who expect certain things from him, or for him to act a certain way.
It’s also during Season 4 that Re:Zero saw its highest ratings yet, ending its 11-episode first-cours with six straight episodes rated 9.0 or higher on IMDb. Episode 11 debuted with a perfect 10, making it only the fourth single episode in anime history to do so. The rating lasted nearly the entire day, until hordes of angry anime fans decided it was time to leave negative reviews on the site, dropping the rating to 9.9. Episode 11 has a staggering 51 thousand perfect 10 out of 10 reviews. The second-most popular rating, with just over a thousand fan reviews, is a 1 out of 10.
On MyAnimeList, Re:Zero‘s fourth season has received immensely favorable feedback, shooting the series to second place on the site’s Top 100 anime list.
Re:Zero Season 4 Isn’t Finished Yet
The Latest Season Is Set to Resume Later this Year
Though it ended on an emotionally-driven high note, Re:Zero‘s fourth season isn’t over yet. The series is currently set to return in August 2026 with the second half of Season 4, titled “Recapture Arc”, the length of which is currently unknown. Episode 11 leaves the characters on a cliffhanger, as Subaru regains his will to fight on following an emotional conversation with Emilia. His memories have yet to return, but he’s set himself on the right path.
