Ridley Scott is one of the most underrated filmmakers of all time and deserves far more credit than he receives. When speaking about the greatest director of all time, many names are thrown out, including Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Stanley Kubrick. Strangely, despite his incredible run on some of the greatest films ever, Scott’s name is rarely mentioned.
There are plenty of auteur directors with films in 2026, and many of these will certainly be strong. Filmmakers like Boots Riley and Robert Eggers are excellent newer voices, but have failed to garner the same kind of popular following that Scott has. A blockbuster filmmaker first and foremost, Scott also has an interesting voice of his own.
Scott also returns to the big screen this year. His new sci-fi movie The Dog Stars features a brilliant cast in a post-apocalyptic setting, and has the potential to be one of the best films of the year. However, there has been little discussion about the potential for this exciting new film, which is surprising.
Even if one believes Scott is no longer in the greatest phase of his career, it is hard not to consider him to be one of the best filmmakers that have ever lived.
Looking back at the long and comprehensive list of films that he has worked on over the years, in all kinds of genres, few filmmakers deserve as much credit and esteem as him for a myriad of notable reasons.
Ridley Scott Originated Two Of The Best Science Fiction Franchises
Ridley Scott has one of the most impressive Hollywood resumes, dating back to his first handful of films. His second feature was the science fiction classic Alien, an incredible achievement in horror that remains influential to this day. The haunting feature was an incredibly original spectacle and pioneered one of the best science fiction franchises still going.
Next, Scott came out with Blade Runner. While the film was not an enormous hit upon release, it has since become one of the most beloved science fiction movies of all time, and even spawned an incredible sequel. The world is even continuing into the future, with more stories in film and TV planned.
For comparison, George Lucas, the pioneer of one great science fiction franchise with Star Wars, is still discussed regularly. As is James Cameron, who originated two great science fiction franchises of his own with Terminator and Avatar.
All of this makes it strange that Scott is not given more esteem for his contributions to the science fiction genre. While perhaps understood more as a journeyman director than many of his peers, it can’t be denied that Scott has made some great science fiction even beyond these stories, including The Martian and Prometheus.
His Diverse Body Of Work Includes Many Award-Winners Like Gladiator
Most impressively, Scott has not been limited to science fiction franchises in his brilliant work. Gladiator is arguably the most important point of conversation here, as the film went on to dominate the 73rd Academy Awards. It won five prizes, including Best Picture and Best Actor.
Ridley Scott has been nominated for Best Director three times, for that film as well as Black Hawk Down and Thelma & Louise, each of which gathered some accolades. The former won for Best Film Editing and Best Sound, while the latter won for Best Original Screenplay.
With all three being such different films, this helps to show the incredible range that Scott has displayed throughout his long career. Period settings, war pictures, and character dramas are only part of his oeuvre.
Scott has also been nominated many times across the different awards bodies, and has won a handful, including two Golden Globes for his work on television with RKO 281 and The Gathering Storm.
The best Ridley Scott movies have been incredible. Legend, Hannibal, and Matchstick Men are only a handful of the great features that he has put out throughout the decades. However, there has been some concern about Scott’s work in more recent years, with some seeing a diminishing in quality.
Scott May Have Slowed Down, But He’s Not Done Yet
Ridley Scott continues to make great movies in Hollywood. While certain efforts have been disappointing, like Ridley Scott’s strange Napoleon movie, the film was still a worthwhile endeavor that gave an unusual focus to some of the ruler’s idiosyncrasies alongside some great sequences of incredible scale.
Other projects from the director have been far more successful. The compellingly strange House of Gucci had an incredible amount of character, and the excellent The Last Duel may not have been a huge box office success, but it was an excellent period drama with a great script, well executed by Scott’s steady direction.
There’s only more to come from the director, too. He and Hugh Jackman are working on Treasure Island next, which could be an incredible new pirate story for a new era. This is alongside The Dog Stars, which has the potential to be a breakout hit this summer with its great cast, including Jacob Elordi and Margaret Qualley.
Ridley Scott is sure to keep working into the future, and that’s a great thing for today’s audiences. He brings a unique sensibility and incredible versatility to his craft that helps to make his movies even better. With The Dog Stars and beyond, there looks to be a bright future for Scott.
